October 19, 2017<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0—\u00a0Giffords<\/a>, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and retired NASA astronaut Captain Mark Kelly, announced its endorsement today of Oregon Governor Kate Brown for re-election. As governor, Kate Brown has been a strong advocate for responsible gun violence prevention policies that have made Oregon safer.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year, over 33,000 Americans were killed by a gun. Oregon has not been immune to this deadly crisis: somebody is killed with a gun in Oregon every 21 hours. As governor, Kate Brown hasn\u2019t just seen our nation\u2019s gun violence crisis firsthand, she\u2019s worked tirelessly to combat it. In her first year in office, Governor Brown stood up to the gun lobby and signed a responsible measure that closed a loophole in Oregon law that allowed dangerous people to buy guns without a background check. Since then, she\u2019s been a steadfast champion for addressing the lethal nexus between guns and domestic violence, and firearms and suicides.<\/p>\n

The endorsement of Governor Brown comes on the heels of a failed attempt\u00a0by extreme\u00a0Oregon activists\u00a0to repeal\u00a0SB 719<\/a>,\u00a0which creates a process for obtaining an Extreme Risk Protection Order that prohibits a person who is in danger of hurting themselves or others from possessing a firearm. Earlier this year,\u00a0members of the Oregon Coalition for Common Sense testified on behalf of Senate Bill 719<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0urged Oregon\u2019s leaders to pass the bill<\/a>, which\u00a0was eventually signed into law this fall by Governor Brown.<\/p>\n
